Space Grant advisor and fellow take CoE honors

The University of Washington’s College of the Environment recently honored Space Grant advisor J. Carlos Chavez with its Distinguished Staff Award for 2013. Karl Lang, a Space Grant fellowship recipient, received the Outstanding Community Impact Award.

Carlos has served as Space Grant advisor and student programs coordinator for the past five years. At the award ceremony in late May, Dean Lisa Graumlich recognized his commitment to his students and to creating more undergraduate opportunities, as well as his efforts to foster increased diversity in the sciences.

Karl, a doctoral candidate in Earth and space sciences, has helped design field courses, leads the WSGC-supported outreach group “Rockin’ Out,” and has given a public talk at Town Hall as part of the UW Engage Science Speakers Series.
