Applying for the 2014-2015 Space Grant scholarship for incoming freshmen at the University of Washington? This year we are using an online scholarship application.

Here are few quick facts to make your application process easier.

Eligibility: The Washington NASA Space Grant Consortium Scholarship for Incoming Freshmen is open to accomplished high school seniors, Running Start students, and Early Entrance students. To apply, you must:

  • Be a resident of Washington state
  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Have a minimum GPA of 3.5
  • Plan to major in science, technology, engineering or mathematics at the University of Washington

UW Space Grant scholarships range from $2,000 to $4,000. Scholarships are awarded for one year at a time. Scholarship recipients may apply for award renewal for up to three years, depending on availability of funding. Candidates for renewal must be enrolled in an eligible major, earn a minimum GPA of 3.3, and maintain program requirements for their majors.

Submitting an application: Take note of what materials our application requires and allow yourself plenty of time to gather everything.

You don’t have to complete your application all at once. When you hit the application submit button, you will receive an email containing an individual login that will let you view the status of your application and update your information until applications close on January 15, 2014. This login also allows you to update your in-progress application and see if we have received your transcripts and letters of reference.

Transcripts and essays: All transcripts must be official and sent in a sealed envelope directly from you to our offices. All of your other application materials (essays, economic challenge statement, and list of honors/activities) should be uploaded with your application unless you have prior approval from the Space Grant student advisor.

References: As soon as possible, fill out the reference section of your application. Please list name, title and valid e-mail address for each of the two people who will be writing your letters of recommendation.

Once you have submitted your application, your references will receive a unique email link with instructions on how to upload their letters of recommendation. The letters should be on official school stationery and must include the author’s name, position and signature.

Your references should be math, science or technology teachers who can address your academic ability and potential, leadership qualities and personality traits.
