Apply now for 2014 summer internships

WSGC student researchers in action

The application season for summer internships is in full swing. NASA and WSGC sponsor a wide variety of opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students.

National Internships
NASA One Stop Shopping Initiative: SOLAR is the main gateway to once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to do research with top NASA scientists through more than 20 internship programs. SOLAR applications will be accepted until March 1, 2014.

Keep in mind applications are being reviewed continuously; the earlier you apply, the better your chances of being matched. Applicants for the Space Life Sciences Training Program (SLSTP), for example, may begin receiving offers as early as February 2.

Some NASA programs have earlier deadlines. Langley Aerospace Research Summer Scholars Program (LARSS) offers internships to rising juniors and seniors pursuing degrees in aeronautical engineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, computer science, atmospheric science or other selected aerospace disciplines of interest to the NASA Langley Research Center. That application deadline is February 1.

Applications for the 2014 NASA Academies are hosted on the SOLAR site. However, the NASA Academy deadline is February 7.

Local Internships
Here in Washington state, applications for WSGC’s Private Industry Internship Program are now open. Positions are available at Tethers Unlimited Inc., a Bothell-based research and development company that specializes in advanced space technologies, and Eagle Harbor Technologies, a Seattle company developing pulsed power applications. Positions at Aerojet Rocketdyne in Redmond will be posted in the coming weeks.

The 2014 Space Grant Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) at the University of Washington will begin accepting applications next month.
